The Texas State Animal Resource Team (TXSART) is a program of the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation. Formed in February
2006, the program addresses the need to coordinate preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for animals affected by disasters
in the state of Texas. We serve the residents of Texas through the power of partnerships.
Animal issues are people issues. Owners
of livestock and pets can become extremely attached to their animals and may take undue risks when it comes to protecting
them in a disaster. By addressing and preparing for animal issues before a crisis, both human and animal lives can be saved.
Animal issues in Texas are BIG issues. Although
Texas has about 22.8 million residents, animals still outnumber humans over 30 to 1 in the state. Approximately 62% of households
have at least one animal. (and how many of us have more than one?!)
Animal issues are business issues. Texas
is an agricultural leader, ranking first in the nation for the number of cattle, sheep, goats, and exotic hoofstock. With
a million horses - representing about 11% of all horses in the United States - and 14 million head of cattle, Texas's
lifeblood depends on agricultural animals.
Texans supporting Texans. TXSART
acts as a resource to the state, local jurisdictions, and public by conducting regular planning meetings, participating in
state and local emergency management meetings and conferences, directly providing assistance to state agencies and jurisdictions
as requested, and providing direct-to-the-public preparedness information.
